The first part of thesis creation and synthesizing is actually the reading that you are doing prior to any writing at all. This kind of seems like maybe a pre-step, but it's so important for both analyzing and paraphrasing and getting all of those pieces that you need to create an effective thesis and to effectively synthesize your information.

We define the thesis at the Writing Center as a brief articulation of your paper's central argument and purpose. So basically, this is where your reader is going to be able to look and see, this is what this writer wants me to take away from whatever this piece of writing is.

In academic writing, you aren’t simply reporting what others said on a topic. You are arguing something about a topic. Audio: One thing to think about -- and one of the reasons that I think synthesis and thesis development can be so tricky -- is because of what the goal is in academic writing.
